NEGAUNEE – Cognition Brewing Co. took over first place alone in Class A of the Iron Range Women’s Softball League with a 17-6 victory over former coleader Venice 1.
Mariah LaPointe-Dunham was 4 for 5 and Brigitte LaPointe-Dunham 3 for 4 for the winners as each smacked two home runs.
For Venice 1 in its first loss of the summer, Abbie Salisbury went 4 for 4 and Amy Steele 3 for 4.
In another Class A game played July 20, Buck’s Party Store remained within two games of the top with an 18-13 win over Screened Image.
The winners’ Liz Hamming and Sara Polini and SI’s Charissa Johnson all went 3 for 4 as Hamming and SI’s Kelsie Dewar both tripled.
Ashley Nylander, Leah Dompierre and Jesse Rosten all went 5 for 5 to help Sisters down Jubilee Foods 18-2. Sheri Wooden and Christina Rader both were 2 for 3 for Jubilee.
Taylor Watters and LeAnn Saarela went 6 for 7 and needed all of it to help Jasper Ridge Brewery outscore the Negaunee Eagles 29-27. Among those hits, Watters homered and Saarela and teammate Amber Emanuelson, who was 5 of 7, each had a triple.
The Eagles’ Chastity Ellet, who had three triples, and Amy Bazinette, who homered, went 5 for 5.
Julie Boule went 5 for 5 to lead Cliffs Natural Resources to an 18-12 win over Crossfit 906. Also for the winners, April Lawer was 4 for 5 and Cassy Sandberg homered.
Crossfit’s Kim Koski and Staci Spencer each went 3 for 4 while Hilary Richardson homered.
In Class B, Shelly Mallay doubled, Becky Gauthier went 3 for 3 and Nicole Chapman was cited for good defense as Signs Unlimited pulled out a 7-6 win over Venice 3, which got a triple from Jen Laurila and double from Kelly Delongchamp.
Julie Carlson doubled to help Quality Car Care remain alone in first place with a 14-7 win over Honkala Construction, which got a triple from Kristin Daavettila.
Martin Sports remained a game back with an 18-3 win over Paradise. The winners’ Ashley Talus and Shana Caliguri each went 4 for 4 as Talus hit a triple and had two RBIs and Caliguri doubled and had four RBIs.
In addition, Martin’s Veronica Slone, who was 3 for 4 with four RBIs, and Ashley Asgaard both homered.
Jamee Gobert slammed three home runs and a triple while Lillee Martin went 3 for 4 as Dave’s Collision thumped AAA Insurance 17-6.
AAA’s Chelsea Roberts was 3 for 4 while Toni Enrietti was cited for “awesome pitching and great defense.”
Tina Maki went 4 for 4 with a double and Chelsey Poirier 3 for 4 with three RBIs as Jack’s TeePee 1 dropped Pasquali’s 18-3. Pasquali’s Fran Kelly was 3 for 3 with a double and teammate Tracy Mitchell tripled.
In Class C, Yooper Shirts barely held onto its unblemished record with a 9-8 nailbiter over Palomaki Family Chiropractic.
The winners’ Casey Dugan homered while PFC’s Madison Pruett hit a grand-slam home run.
Tino’s also remained perfect with an easy 31-1 victory over Wooden Nickel, though individual details weren’t available.
U.P. Fabricating stayed two games back with a 13-6 win over River Rock Lanes. The winners’ Alyse Schaeffer hit a triple and River Rock’s Rachel Scott a homer.
Rookies is also two games back after a 16-3 thumping of Venice 2. Rookies’ Mattie Ledy doubled and Venice 2’s Kenzie Richards was 1 of 2.
Ellen Sundberg went 5 for 5 with a triple and three-run base hit as Eastwood plowed past Xccelerated Fitness 17-5. Teammate Denise Kaukola added two RBIs.
Rhonda Bertucci and Hannah Bertucci each went 4 for 4 to lead their namesake, Bertucci Construction, to a 24-4 win over Jack’s TeePee 2, whose pitcher Jolene Rosales chalked up seven strikeouts.
Katie Menard homered and Kim Larson collected three singles as Marquette Embroidery posted a 15-9 win over Willey’s Tire Shop, which got a homer from Brooke Bleckler.
