MARQUETTE – The Marquette Red Bulls Under-14 team compiled a 3-0-1 record to win the Cherry Capitol Cup tournament held in Traverse City May 21-22.
The Superiorland Soccer Association team, which improved to 13-0-4 this season, won its third tourney in as many tries this season. Its next similar event is June 18-19 in the Green Bay, Wisconsin, area.
“This team never backs down from adversity,” U14 head coach Dan Salmon said. “Against Kingdom (Soccer Club), we were down 1-0 at the half and being outplayed. We needed a win and a plus-2 goal differential, so I challenged them (to) rely on their past experiences to set the tone for the next half in which they came out and dominated.”
That was their third game of four in Traverse City against a team from Kalamazoo that the Red Bulls eventually won 3-1. Two second-half goals were scored by Ryan Baldwin and another by Evan Phillips. Assists went to Drew Wyble, Joe Lagrou and Cross Lakenen as goalkeeper Tommie Carrey faced two shots on goal in the first half and Nicolaas Vermaat faced the same number in the second half.
The Marquette team opened with a 3-0 victory over Cedar Springs as Wyble scored twice and Vermaat added the other goal, all the scores coming before halftime. Assists were credited to Vermaat and Phillips as the Wyble’s second goal came directly off a corner kick. Carey faces two shot on net in the opening half and Vermaat saw one after intermission.
Game 2 ended in a 1-1 tie against the River City Rascals of Grand Rapids with Vermaat scoring on a corner kick in the second half with assists going to Wyble and Erik Salminen. Carey was kept busy facing eight shots.
In their final game following the comeback against Kingdom SC, the Red Bulls defeated Lasso Red of Lowell 2-1 in the championship contest.
Wyble scored in the first half with an assist from Ryan Baldwin before Phillips knocked the ball in the net in the second half with an assist going to Tanner Cain.
Carey faces two first-half shots and Vermaat took on one shot after halftime.
