MARQUETTE – Kayce Mullett and Sam Leow have been named the Superiorland Kiwanis Athletes of the Month for May at Marquette Senior High School.
Mullett, a four-year member of the varsity girls soccer team, was captain of the Redettes who finished their season on an 11-game unbeaten streak this spring.
She also was a standout athlete in volleyball, earning All-Great Northern Conference honors and being named to the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region team.
Mullett also played hockey and basketball through her sophomore year before deciding to focus more on advanced placement classes.
She carried a 4.20 grade-point average, earning a number of awards and scholarships that include the Marquette Area Public Schools’ Class of 1977 Local Scholarship, an Excellence in Education Peninsula Medical Academic Achievement Award, and the Louis G. Kaufman Endowment Academic Award.
Mullett was also president of the Class of 2016, treasurer of the National Honor Society and a member of the Renaissance Club, Student Council and Health Occupation Students of America, where she earned first place at the regional leadership conference competition.
She enjoys soccer, travel and working at Third Street Bagel while volunteering at Willow Farms doing therapeutic riding, St. Michael’s Parish Children’s Liturgy, as a Superiorland Soccer Association coach and recently being named a Bay Cliff Health Camp counselor for this summer.
Mullett wil attend the University of Michigan to major in biology and minor in Spanish, with hopes to move onto medical school.
Leow was a member of the MSHS varsity baseball team this spring, leading the Redmen at the plate and behind it as the team’s everyday catcher. He led Marquette in hits and had a .310 batting average with 14 RBIs in 23 games while posting a .976 fielding percentage as catcher.
In American Legion baseball, he was a Mid-Peninsula League All-Star, Blues’ team MVP and member of the state championship team.
He was also captain of the MSHS junior varsity hockey team.
Leow carries a 3.13 GPA and has been on the honor roll and received an Academic Achievement award.
He also takes part in tennis, intramural basketball and disc golf, is a member of the Boy Scouts, and works as an official in Little League baseball and Marquette Junior Hockey.
Leow has volunteered with the Marquette County Conservation District, Marquette County Election Board and Boy Scouts of America.
He plans to attend Michigan Tech University and major in environmental engineering and forestry.
