NEGAUNEE – Mandie Meyer hit an over-the-fence home run and went 5 for 5 at the plate to lead Cognition Brewing Co. to a 23-19 victory over Buck’s Party Store in Class A of the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on Wednesday.
Buck’s Kathy Hill was 4 of 5 in Week 2 competition in the league.
In another Class A game, Amy Schultz went 5 for 5 to help Screened Image outscore Crossfit 906 28-11.
The winners’ Charissa Johnson was 4 of 5 with a triple, Hannah Holma was 3 of 5 with a triple and double and Candy Kannainen was 3 of 4.
For Crossfit, Staci Spencer and Erin King each went 3 of 4 while Brianna Ranta tripled.
Leah Dompierre and Anna Dompierre each went 4 of 5 to held Sisters get past the Negaunee Eagles 12-11 in extra innings. The Eagles’ Alaina Treloar was 4 of 4 and teammate Denver Johnson 3 of 4.
In another nailbiter, LeeAnn Saarela went 4 for 4 to help Jasper Ridge Brewery ease past Jubilee Foods 9-8. Teammate Erika Roberts was 3 of 4 while Jubilee’s Holly Nardi went 3 of 3.
Chelsie Wealton cracked a grand slam homer and totaled six RBIs as Venice 1 plowed past Cliffs Natural Resources 29-9.
The winners’ Nikki Whitford was 4 of 5 with two RBIs while Kerry White went 4 of 4. For Cliffs, Julie Boule collected three hits and Jess Syrjala was 2 of 3 with a triple.
In Class B, Tayler Gray struck out nine and went 5 of 5 at the plate to help Martin Sports hold off Dave’s Collision 22-10.
Teammate Thalicia Gray provided the power, hitting two homers, going 4 for 5 and collecting eight RBIs. Veronica Stone also went 4 of 5 with a homer and three RBIs.
Dave’s Melanee Bess was 4 of 5 with a double.
Becky Gauthier was 4 of 4 with a triple as Signs Unlimited outlasted Jack’s Teepee 1 12-11 in extra innings. Teammate Nicole Chapman was 2 of 4 with a triple while Jack’s Jordan Dault went 4 of 4.
Three more Class B games were also decided by a single run.
AAA Insurance nipped Honkala Construction 10-9 as the winners’ Chelsey Robinson had three hits and Honkala’s Kaitlyn Halonen homered.
Tricia Miilu hit the game-winning triple to lead Pasquali’s past Paradise 6-5. Paradise’s Maria Stanaway and Jessica Harper each had three hits.
Doni Hernandez went 3 of 4 and Connie Kontio 3 of 5 to help Quality Car Care overcome Venice 3, 7-6. Venice’s Katy VanBuren was 3 of 4 and Joline Silva doubled.
In Class C, Reva Hudson scored the winning run in extra innings as Wooden Nickel slipped past Bertucci Construction 13-12.
Hudson and Whitney Baugnat, who had two triples, each went 3 of 4. Bertucci’s Kinsie Bertucci hit two homers and Hannah Bertucci hit one.
Chelsea Pekrul slammed the game-winning homer to lead Yooper Shirts to a wild 23-22 victory over Rookies, which lost despite Ally Solander going 4 of 5.
Jessa Johnson hit two homers to support pitcher Renee Caya’s eight-strikeout performance as U.P. Fabricating turned back Willey’s Tire Shop 16-11.
Willey’s Krystal Heikkinen and Brooke Bleckler each hit triples.
Rachel Scott homered and Stephanie Perry and Emily Rushford each went 3 of 4 to lead Red Rock Lanes to a 23-0 whitewash of Jack’s Teepee 2.
Ellen Sundberg was 4 of 4 with a double to help Eastwood get past Palomaki Family Chiropractic 9-3. The winners’ Keri Hytinen and PFC’s Katy Trudgeon each had three hits.
Heather Sandstrom had four singles and an RBI to ease Marquette Embroidery past Xccelerated Fitness 10-4. Embroidery’s Angela Leece collected four RBIs and Betty Nelson had one RBI.
Tino’s mercied Venice 2, 17-1, though player details weren’t available.
