Red Bulls claim dome soccer U14 title

MARQUETTE – A 2-1 victory in the championship game over FC United of New London, Wisconsin, enabled the Marquette U14 Red Bulls soccer team to claim its second straight Superior Dome tournament title held April 15-17.

Evan Phillips scored twice for the winners, once in each half. Trevor Salmon drew two assists and Alden Pascoe had one for the Red Bulls (8-0-3).

Tommie Carey recorded four saves in goal for Marquette.

“The team had to dig deep to preserve the championship in the final minutes and it showed a true team effort in the win,” Red Bulls head coach Dan Salmon said.

To reach the finals, the home team needed a win or a tie in its semifinal matchup. The Marquette squad got it, a 2-2 tie with Gaylord Extreme helped by a goal with three minutes left by Drew Wyble on a free kick.

Trevor Salmon notched the other Marquette goal, assisted by Wyble.

Carey faced two shots and Nico Vermaat three in sharing goaltending duties for the Red Bulls.

In their opener, the Red Bulls blanked UPFA Bayside of Escanaba, 7-0, behind the goaltending of Carey and Salmon.

Finn Whalen scored twice, with Salmon, Wyble, Evan Phillips, Hunter Sides and Erik Salminen each notching single tallies.

Recording assists were Phillips with three along with single ones by Vermaat, Salmon, Tanner Cain, Ryan Baldwin and Elijah Shevy.
