MSHS finishes football season as No. 1 team in U.P.

MARQUETTE — Marquette finished at the top of the final 11-player weekly high school football poll that was released Tuesday by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

They received all five first-place votes. MSHS (5-1) had the maximum possible 25 total voting points.

Sault Ste. Marie (4-2) was back in second place with 17 points. while Kingsford (3-2) had 16 points for third place.

Menominee (4-2) was in fourth with nine points and Houghton (2-2) claimed fifth.

The Wykons of West Iron County took sixth place with a 6-0 record and two points.

The 11-player poll is completed with Iron Mountain (5-1) and Calumet (2-3) tied for seventh with one point.

In the 8-player rankings, Munising (4-2) slipped to sixth place with two points and is the only Superiorland team in this poll.

Defending state champion Pickford (5-1) claimed four first-place votes to hold onto the No. 1 spot with 24 points No. 2 North Central (6-0) earned the other first-place vote and 21 total points.

Cedarville (5-1) was in third with 14 points with Lake Linden-Hubbell (3-3) finishing fourth with 11 points and Forest Park (4-1) rounding out the top five with three points.

The UPSSA changed to two polls this fall because the season began with an equal number of teams, 18, playing both the 11- and eight-player games.

Teams start the first-round of MHSAA playoffs later this week.
