Marquette tops 11-player high school football poll

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School Redmen have shot to the top of the 11-player poll from the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

MSHS (3-1) is the leader with 20 total points, including one vote for first.

Sault Ste. Marie (3-1) was right behind in second with 19 points and three first-place ballots. Kingsford (3-1) received the other vote for first place and was in third overall with 18 points.

Gladstone (2-1) had 13 points, good enough for third, and in a tie for fourth were Iron Mountain (4-0) and Negaunee (3-1) with two points each.

Calumet rounded out the 11-player list with one point.

In the 8-player poll, defending state champion Pickford (4-0) claimed all five first-place votes for 25 points.

In second was North Central (4-0) with 20 points while Munising (4-0) was in third with 13 points.

Other teams getting votes were Lake Linden-Hubbell (2-1), nine points for fourth place; Cedarville (3-1) six points for fifth; and Stephenson (3-1), two points for sixth place.

The UPSSA cited changing to two polls this fall because there are now an equal number of teams, 18, playing both the eight- and 11-player games.
