Gwinn falls twice to Calumet

LAKE LINDEN — Calumet scored a pair of football-sounding victories on the softball diamond on Friday, defeating Gwinn 24-0 and 17-2, each game lasting three innings.

“These girls work hard and it showed today,” sixth-year Calumet head coach Joel Rastello told the Daily Mining Gazette.

After struggles in just about all phases of the game in the opener, the Modeltowners put together a two-run rally in the third inning of the nightcap.

Emily Mannor and Audrey Mannor reached on singles before pitcher Brooke Mannor stepped to the plate and slapped a line-drive triple to the left-centerfield fence to clear the bases.

“Obviously, I was pleased with the second game more than the first,” Gwinn manager Dan Shelafoe told the Gazette. “We saw some progress both at the plate and in the field. But overall, you cannot win games giving up error after error as we did in both games. We have a lot of work to do.”

Molly Helminen threw three perfect innings in the opener for the Copper Kings, facing the minimum nine batters and striking out six of them.

Ellie Djerf pitched for Calumet (7-1) in the second game, striking out seven.
