Redettes fall on late shot at Petoskey Invitational; Republic, SC girls both come up short

By Journal Sports Staff

PETOSKEY — The Marquette girls basketball team’s first game at the Petoskey Invitational went down to the wire Friday night, but the Redettes came up just short in the end, falling 44-42 to Brighton.

Avery Ledy led the Redettes with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Madison Carter had 13 points.

Marquette held a 15-9 advantage heading into the second quarter, but Brighton answered back to tied the score at 24-24 at the half. The two teams were tied again after the third quarter at 38-38 before Brighton edged the Redettes at the end on a late shot.

“We ran out of gas in the second quarter and gave up the eight-point lead we had earned,” Marquette head coach Ben Smith said. “We were tied at the end of the third and it was tight throughout the fourth. We burned some clock looking for the last shot and they forced a turnover with 11 seconds left. They made a tough baseline hook (shot) from eight feet out over two kids and we couldn’t get a timeout called in time before the horn. We have a lot of things to look at and learn from moving forward.”

Marquette plays Petoskey at noon today.

She made R-M’s lone 3-pointer as teammate Kaitlin Ambeuhl added nine points.
