NEWBERRY — Whenever a new coach takes over a program, they try to create some changes and build the team to where they want the team to be.

That was the case for the Newberry girls basketball team last year as James Dzelak took over the job. The Indians struggled his first year, but Dzelak thinks that things might be moving in the right direction this season.

“Last year, we finished the season 8-12,” Dzelak said.

“I thought we were fairly competitive. There were a few games that we weren’t. Overall, we struggled offensively, but we were decent defensively. My first year as head coach, I was trying to change a few things up and we were pretty young last year.

“I’ve got five seniors this year, all of them fairly well-balanced. We don’t have a lot of size, but I’m going to depend heavily on a sophomore this year in Katie Rahilly. Her and Adrian DePew, who is a senior, those would be our key players on the offensive end. Katie defensively is pretty quick and strong. She’s able to get out and run the floor really well. Adrian has a pretty good floor game with the ball and she’s probably the biggest player that we have. We’re trying to work her into the post this year.”

“If we go 12-8, I’ll be feeling pretty good. We’re probably around a .500 team. I think we’re building toward something. We’re pretty strong at the JV level.”
