MARQUETTE — Rapid River’s third visit to the eight-player football state finals proved to be the gem Saturday as it earned a 30-18 victory over Onekama in the Division 2 finals at the Superior Dome.
Senior Gunner Larson and junior Tyler Sundling rushed for 136 yards apiece for the Rockets, who reached the playoffs all eight seasons and were runners-up in 2011 and 2013.
This marked the state title of any kind in the school’s history.
Sundling scored on a pair of 22-yard dashes.
Larson added a 5-yard TD run and senior Brent Lundquist tossed a 14-yard TD pass to classmate Nate Olson.
Rapid River (10-3) outgained the Portagers (10-3) 359-199 in total offense.
