Mustang spikers take second at Munising Invitational

By Journal Sports Staff

EBEN JUNCTION — The Munising Mustangs volleyball team had a solid performance Saturday afternoon as it took second at the Munising Invitational, which was held at Superior Central High School.

“We had some moments of phenomenal play, especially in our win over Manistique in the semifinals,” Munising co-head coach Ann Crandell-Williams said.

“We learned that we still need to work on our passing consistency and tougher mental focus in critical moments.

“Overall, we are very proud of this team and looking forward to building on what we saw today.”

During pool play, the Mustangs defeated Westwood in two sets, topped the Superior Central JV in two, and split matches 1-1 with both Ishpeming and Brimley.

In the semifinals, Munising outlasted the Emeralds in three sets. After losing in the first one, the Mustangs earned a tight win in the second set (26-24) and then took the third set 15-12 to move on the finals.

The Mustangs took on Brimley in the finals and they won the first set 25-21. However, Munising dropped the second one and then Brimley took the third set (19-17) to win the final.

Michaela Werner led the Mustangs with 27 kills and five blocks, while Daryn Johnson chipped in 19 kills and had 14 aces. Emily Contreras finished with 71 assists and Taylor Downs was Munising’s defensive leader with 20 digs. Contreras and Werner were both named to the all-tournament team.
