State champion Jets dominate All-U.P. Class D

MARQUETTE — There weren’t any area teams that made the All-Upper Peninsula Class D First and Second teams in boys basketball, but state champion North Central locked up a whole bunch of awards.

After Jason Whitens and Dawson Bilski earned spots on the All-U.P. Dream Team, Bobby Kleiman and Marcus Krachinski won awards for the First and Second teams, respectively. This is the second straight year Kleiman got a First Team nod and was Krachinski’s first time on the Second squad.

Ewen-Trout Creek also picked up two awards. After coming up short for Dream Team, Jake Witt was a unanimous repeat selection for the First Team, and rightfully so after averaging 24.2 points per game. Witt also made the Associated Press’ all-state First Team.

Witt’s teammate Austin Berglund had an easy time getting onto the Second Team.

Dollar Bay also landed two spots as Devin Schmitz earned a First Team nod and Jaden Janke made the Second Team. Schmitz averaged 21.6 points for the Blue Bolts, while Janke was at 18.2.

Both played huge roles in DB’s near-upset of North Central in the Class D regional semifinals, when the Bolts lost just 75-73 when their comeback ran out of time in looking to end the Jets’ national-record 78-game win streak that eventually became 83 with the state title.

A big member of the First Team was Pickford’s 6-foot-7 center Derrick Edington, who made Dream last season and also made the all-state First Team. Carney-Nadeau senior Hunter Eichhorn got the final First Team spot.

The rest of the Second Team was made up of Forest Park senior Dan Nocerini, Ontonagon senior Mitchell Borseth, Cedarville senior Chase Massey, Jeffers senior Jaden Wood, Bessemer senior Max Samardich, Rapid River junior Logan Hardwick and Bark River-Harris junior Ryan Arndt.
