Redmen beat Traverse City West with strong free-throw shooting

By Journal Sports Staff

PETOSKEY — Marquette shot its free throws well in the fourth quarter to hang on for a 69-64 high school boys basketball victory over Traverse City West on Saturday afternoon.

Playing at the Petoskey Invitational, the Redmen (1-1) sank 16 of 20 free throws in the final period to protect what was a lead of five points at the end of each of the first three quarters. For the game, MSHS made 21 of 26 at the line.

“We had to grind out this win,” MSHS coach Brad Nelson said. “My kids need that type of game.”

Senior guard Alex DuVall led Marquette scorers with 17 points, even though he didn’t get to the line in the fourth.

Junior forward Trey McFerrin added 16 points, while freshman guard Joe Ostrowsky added nine and senior guard Ian Ogea eight. The latter two combined to sink 10 of 12 free throws in the last eight minutes.

McFerrin also had a team-high five rebounds.

Caleb Corwin led the Titans with 19 points, while Miigwaannhs Barrientoz had 15 with a 7-for-7 day at the line.

“Anytime you come out of this tournament 1-1, especially with the young team we have, you have to say you’re going to be happy,” Nelson said.

Despite their youth — the Redmen have two freshmen and four sophomores on varsity — 11 players scored for the second straight day.

TCW won the JV game 76-64.

Next up for the Redmen is a game at Gladstone on Tuesday night.
