Modeltowners win 4th in a row, Vikings come roaring back

GWINN – The Gwinn Modeltowners volleyball team used a strong, senior-led attack Thursday night to defeat Negaunee in four sets, 25-22, 25-16, 16-25, 25-22, and extend their winning streak to four matches.

Anna Cole and Taylor Ehnis led the Modeltowners (4-2) with eight kills apiece, while Trisha McGuire had 17 assists. Kia Evans had 20 digs and Brenna Bruce 19 for Gwinn.

“This was our first all-around team win,” Gwinn head coach Toni Roberts said. “Our seniors put on a show tonight. They put it all together and communicated well. You could really see their leadership on the court.

“We also pulled up a sophomore setter (McGuire) recently, and since then, we haven’t lost. We have a system going now and we’ve really come together.”

Gwinn also won the JV match, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22.

The Modeltowners play at Ishpeming Tuesday.

Baraga 3, Dollar Bay 2

At Dollar Bay, the Vikings rallied from two games down to eke out a 23-25, 17-25, 25-10, 25-17, 15-11 victory.

“We started off and made a nice comeback in the first game,” DB head coach Larry Monette said. “Baraga just played much better and we could not pass the ball very well.

“Baraga hit the ball well and had good kills. We just couldn’t return them, and Baraga played good defense, so we just lost the momentum.”

Natalie Maxson and Paige Isaacson each recorded five kills for the Blue Bolts as teammate Cami Daavettila had 12 assists.

Up next, Baraga hosts Ewen-Trout Creek on Tuesday.
