Miners show their might

MARQUETTE – The first U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association high school football poll has been released and not surprisingly, the Negaunee Miners take the top spot in the Big Five list for Week One.

Negaunee, who is 4-0 and is coming off a huge win over Iron Mountain last week, picked up four out of the possible seven votes to earn the No. 1 ranking. Menominee was just behind at No. 2 as it earned three first place votes.

In the Little Five poll, St. Ignace was No. 1 with five first place votes with Ishpeming (2-1) second with two first place votes. Newberry (4-0) was also ranked in the poll as they took the No. 4 spot.

Undefeated and defending state champion North Central (7-0) earned all first place votes to lead the Eight-Man poll.

The Michigan AP prep football poll was also released today and the Miners are sitting pretty there as well.

Negaunee was No. 1 in the top 10 of the Division 6 poll, edging out second place Millington.

Newberry and Ishpeming are both ranked in the Division 8 poll. Newberry took the No. 7 spot, while Ishpeming was at No. 9.
