MOUNT PLEASANT – Munising has the unenviable task of taking on the state’s No. 1 ranked team to open the MHSAA Division 4 team wrestling finals this afternoon.

The Mustangs, with a 19-5 dual meet record, drew the short straw as the No. 8 ranked team out of the eight teams in the D4 finals. That set them up to open against No. 1 New Lothrop (21-5), a team that has participated in the pre-Christmas Marquette Invitational numerous times.

All four D4 quarterfinals take place at noon in McGuirk Arena at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. The other quarterfinals pit No. 4 Hesperia vs. No. 5 Springport, No. 3 Hudson vs. No. 6 Manchester and No. 2 Decatur vs. No. 7 LeRoy Pine River.

If the Mustangs pull off the upset today, they and today’s other winners come back for the semifinals on Saturday morning and early afternoon, then the championship matches later that afternoon.
