Wildcats volleyball drops pair of matches at Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — The Northern Michigan University volleyball team lost both its matches on the first day of the University of Indianapolis Invitational.

Fellow GLIAC member Davenport defeated the Wildcats in three sets, 25-21, 26-24, 25-19, while Minnesota State-Moorhead felled NMU 25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 26-24, 15-6.

In the third set, Northern led just 20-17 before scoring four straight points, including a kill by sophomore Lizzy Stark and service ace by Lauren Van Remortel. Stark got set point with a kill.

The fourth set was tied at every point starting at 20-20 until Moorhead scored two final points to win.

Stark finished the two matches with 34 kills, averaging 5.67 per set, while Sarah Kuehn had 20, Hailey Wickstrom 16 and freshman Abigail Durecki 12.

Van Remortel notched 75 assists and matched with Durecki and sophomore Lauren Caprini with two aces each.

Caprini paced the squad with a total of 26 digs. Van Remortel contributed 17, while Stark had 12 and sophomore Alli Yacko 10.

Kuehn posted a team-best eight blocks as Van Remortel, Stark and Durecki each had three.

The Wildcats (2-4) play their final two matches at Indy today, taking on Saint Leo at 11:30 a.m. EDT and former GLIAC member Gannon at 4 p.m.
