NMU men’s, women’s soccer teams lose on the road

By Journal Sports Staff

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University fell an important spot in the GLIAC men’s soccer standings after losing 2-1 at Purdue Northwest on Friday afternoon.

The Wildcat women lost 4-0 at Ashland on Friday to remain in the league basement.

Each NMU team has two GLIAC road games remaining. The men are at Davenport at noon Sunday and Northwood at noon Friday, while the women go to Saginaw Valley State at noon Sunday and Michigan Tech at 5 p.m. Friday.

At Hammond, Indiana, the Pride (7-6-1, 5-5 GLIAC) jumped over NMU (6-4-4, 3-3-4) into third place with 15 points, while the Wildcats are tied for fourth with Northwood and Ashland with 13 points. NMU and Northwood each have two league games remaining, Ashland just one.

While Northern has clinched a spot in the GLIAC Tournament, it is in a battle for third or fourth place, which would allow it to host a first-round game.

On Friday, neither Northern nor Purdue NW attempted a shot on goal in the first 30 minutes, but soon after, the Pride’s Enrique Serna scored in the 32nd minute for the only goal of the first half.

Sophomore midfielder Luca Lippert had the Wildcats’ first shot on goal soon after the second half began. Then about 20 minutes into the half, NMU knotted the score 1-1 on a Purdue NW own goal, while Northern had another shot on goal less than five minutes later by sophomore forward Ben Hoffman.

The home team won the game in the 81st minute on Felix Guenzel’s first goal of the season on a shot from about 20 yards out.

NMU freshman goalkeeper Valentin Kliebe didn’t make a save in his 11th appearance and 10th start of the season. His goals against average stands at 0.89 and save percentage at .839, both second in the GLIAC.

Ashland 4,

NMU women 0

At Ashland, Ohio, the Eagles scored two goals in each half as NMU (4-9-2, 1-6) remained three points out of the eighth and final women’s GLIAC Tournament spot.

NMU has three points, ninth-place Northwood four and eighth-place Purdue Northwest six. However, PNW has just one league game remaining while NMU and Northwood each have two.

Bella Petrock scored both first-half goals for third-place Ashland (9-2-4, 4-1-2) in the seventh and 30th minutes, while Faith Lewis and Stephanie Slader scored in the 70th and 88th minutes in the second half.

Northern had four shots on goal, two by senior forward Jaime Montgomery and one each by senior forward Aimee Colla and freshman forward Caroline Halonen.

NMU senior goalkeeper Emma Vermette made seven saves, bringing her season total to 52.
