Braunschweig collects 1,000th dig, but NMU spikers get swept by Wayne State

By Journal Sports Staff

DETROIT — Northern Michigan University senior Rachel Braunschweig notched a career achievement Saturday as she picked up her 1,000th dig, but the Wildcats couldn’t notch a victory as they were swept by Wayne State 3-0.

The Warriors (10-7, 5-4 GLIAC) controlled play throughout the first set and easily won it 25-11. NMU (10-7, 2-7) played better in the second set, but WSU held on to earn a 25-19 win. Needing a victory in the third set to keep the match alive, the Wildcats kept it close, but in the end, they fell 25-22.

Maggie Liebeck led Northern offensively with eight kills, while Sarah Kuehn chipped in six and Alli Yacko had a service ace. Defensively, Braunschweig finished with 12 digs and Leticia Antunes had nine. Elsie Zajicek had three blocks for the Wildcats, while Antunes and Kuehn both had two.

NMU plays at Wisconsin-Parkside Friday and then at Purdue Northwest Saturday.
