Tolvanen earns 3rd WCHA rookie honor

MARQUETTE – For the fourth time this season, Northern Michigan University goaltender Atte Tolvanen has been saluted by the WCHA.

On Monday, the freshman goaltender from Vihti, Finland, was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. It’s his third rookie award this season to go with once being named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.

Tolvanen stopped 63 of 66 Minnesota State shots over the weekend to help host NMU – outshot 66-28 in two games – earn two WCHA points with a pair of ties.

He made 30 saves in a 1-1 tie Friday night and had 33 stops during a 2-2 deadlock Saturday, turning aside 20 of 21 shots faced in the third period and overtime over the two games.

Tolvanen is ranked second in the WCHA with a 1.38 goals-against average and third with a .955 saves percentage, leading league rookies in both categories.
