NMU adds spiker

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University head volleyball coach Dominic Yoder has announced the signing of Gabriela Martnez.

A 5-foot-2 libero from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, Martnez will transfer to NMU from the University of Puerto Rico, Ro Piedras, for the fall of 2016.

“Gaby has tremendous court awareness and ball control skills,” Yoder said. “She really knows how to play the game at a very high and competitive level.”

At Colegio Marista, her high school, Martnez was named the 2014 Student-Athlete of the Year.

In 2013 and 2014, she captured MVP honors at the Dorado Academy Tournament, one of the premier volleyball tournaments in Puerto Rico.

“Gaby’s speed, leadership and confidence will be at the core of her success with us,” Yoder said. “We’re looking for Gaby to make a big impact defensively on our team … next season.”
