Wildcats soccer team wins again

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team extended its win streak to four with a 3-1 win at Tiffin University on Sunday afternoon.

The victory pushed the Wildcats over the .500 mark in the GLIAC at 4-3, a major accomplishment after the team began the season on a seven-game losing streak.

The Wildcats (4-7 overall) and Dragons traded first-half goals, Northern getting on the board first when Wynona Maravilla ricocheted a shot off of a Tiffin defender in the 34th minute. Tiffin’s Valerie Brown answered about seven minutes later to even it at 1-1.

The score remained that way until nearly 20 minutes into the second half when NMU’s Aimee Colla found the back of the net for an unassisted goal, while teammate Helen Kiilunen added insurance less than 10 minutes later.

The Wildcats held an edge in both shots, 24-14, and corner kicks, 6-3. Alexandra Simmons continued her solid play in net for Northern, posting seven saves.

NMU travels to Ferris State on at 4 p.m. Friday.
