NMU’s Tolvanen top rookie again

MARQUETTE – Freshman goalie Atte Tolvanen of Northern Michigan University has been named the Rookie of the Week in the WCHA for the second time this season.

Tolvanen was honored on Monday after turning away 63 of 67 shots in the Wildcats’ home-and-home series split against former No. 16 Michigan Tech.

On Friday, Tolvanen made 20 saves to lead NMU to a 4-1 home win in front of a sellout crowd. Then on Saturday, he made a career-high 43 stops in a 3-1 loss at Houghton.

Tolvanen was also named top WCHA rookie two weeks earlier after stopping 66 of 71 shots at Wisconsin.

Tolvanen has faced 177 shots so far this season, the most in the WCHA and the fourth most in the nation. Among goaltenders who have faced at least 150 shots, his 2.56 goals-against average and .921 saves percentage rank fourth.
