GLIAC honors NMU diver

MARQUETTE – Molly Kearney of Northern Michigan University has been named the GLIAC Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week after her performance against Ohio schools Findlay and Tiffin, the league office announced Wednesday.

Kearney qualified for the NCAA Division II national championships in both the one- and three-meter diving events in the team’s first official meet of the season.

“Molly has had a great start to her senior year,” NMU head coach Heidi Voigt said. “Qualifying for nationals this early takes some pressure off. Now she can focus on fine-tuning her big dives for next semester.”

Kearney started the weekend on Friday by posting a score of 261.15 points in the one-meter. She followed that with 247.80 in the three-meter.

Kearney returned to the pool Saturday and outdid herself, recording a 267.20 in the one-meter and a 275.20 in the three-meter. She won all four of those events.

Kearney and the Wildcats return to the pool on Friday, Oct. 16, when they travel to St. Cloud (Minn.) State for a meet that includes Minnesota State-Moorhead.
