NMU soccer loses heartbreaker

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team keeps coming close, but can’t quite get over the hump for its first win of the season.

On Sunday afternoon, the Wildcats lost a heartbreaking 2-1 double-overtime game at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, to fall to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in the GLIAC. The Cavaliers improved to 4-3-2 and 2-2.

Northern got off to a good start, keeping the game scoreless throughout the first half, then scoring first in the game’s 61st minute when Sophia Sachs knocked the ball into the net.

But Walsh wasted little time evening the score as Jessie Gearhart fed Kristen Conti the ball for a goal about a minute later.

The game again remained scoreless for the balance of regulation and throughout the first OT before Gearhart found Corynee Swift for the Cavaliers’ game-winner in the 101st minute.

Walsh held a narrow shots advantage, 14-13, though NMU had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Caroline Glantz recorded eight saves for the Wildcats in net, while counterpart Michaella Stucky of Walsh was called on to make four saves.

NMU returns home for a 4 p.m. Friday match against Malone (4-4, 2-2).
