Wildcats honors scholarly athletes

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University has named scholar-athletes of the month for the past four months, recognizing students who excel both in the classroom and on the playing field.

Each of those honored was nominated from a professor in their academic department.

They are Abby Roche, Levi Perry, Aspen McHugh and Courtney Lemon.

November’s honoree is senior cross country and track and field runner Roche, who was nominated by Patrick Jerome of the communication and performance studies department.

Roche ran in the first four meets of the season with her best six-kilometer time of 27 minutes, 19 seconds coming at the Spartan Invitational cross country meet. She also ran a 22:56 at the Lucian Rosa Invitational 5K race.

December’s athlete is Perry, a junior linebacker on the football team, who was nominated by Michael Andary of the technology and occupational services department.

Perry was a football captain and played in seven games last season with 45 tackles, an average of 6.4 tackles per game, third on the team. He also had 2 1/2 sacks with 5 1/2 tackles for loss, both second-highest among Wildcats.

For January is senior swimmer McHugh, who was nominated by Phil Watts of the health and human performance department.

McHugh recently competed at the GLIAC Championships, placing 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.18 and 11th in the 200 breast in 2:25.26.

February’s honoree is senior women’s basketball center Lemon, who was nominated by Mitchell Klett of the education department.

Lemon has started 19 games this season, averaging 7.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. She scored a career-high 22 points earlier this season in a win against Northwood and has recorded two double-doubles this season.

Lemon’s team finishes its regular season at 5:30 p.m. today at the Berry Events Center against Michigan Tech.

All of this season’s scholar-athletes will be honored at halftime of tonight’s men’s basketball game, which starts at 7:30 p.m.
