NMU men doomed by late rally

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northern Michigan University was outscored 8-1 in the game’s final two minutes as Ohio Dominican erased a 67-65 deficit and went on for a 73-68 victory in a game played in Ohio on Sunday afternoon.

There were nine ties and 24 lead changes with the largest lead being seven points in this back-and-forth game.

The Wildcats, now 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC, grabbed their final lead with 2:23 to go when junior guard Terry Nash made a layup.

But ODU’s Shemar Waugh hit a jump shot 15 seconds later to tie it 67-67 and Waugh and Mark Minch each made both their free throws down the stretch.

Senior forward Chavis Mattison hit a free throw with 43 seconds left to cap a 19-point, 10-rebound, three-block effort coming off the bench for NMU.

Sophomore guard Marcus Hall added 13 points and freshman forward Alex Sorenson 11 as the Wildcats made 54 percent (27 of 50) of their shots from the field and outscored the Panthers 38-32 in the paint.

Hall hit a 3-pointer for Northern’s first lead at 9-7 with 15:27 left in the first half, a lead it held until just before halftime when ODU used a 14-4 run to take a 39-35 advantage at the break. Mattison had 12 points in the first 20 minutes.

The Wildcats opened the second half with a 7-2 run and retook a 42-41 lead with 17:19 left.

NMU returns home this week to host Ashland at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Lake Erie at 3 p.m. Saturday.
