NMU-OTS’ Nutter wins bronze

MARQUETTE — Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestler Alston Nutter of Northern Michigan University earned a bronze medal Saturday at the Junior World Championships in Tallinn, Estonia.

Nutter, who competed in the 63-kilogram (138.9-pound) weight class, faced Kamil Czarnecki of Poland for the bronze medal. Czarnecki was up 6-0 over Nutter before Nutter was able to throw and secure his win with a pin with 4:44 left.

Previously, Nutter defeated Assaukhat Mukhamadiyev of Kazakhstan 5-2 in the quarterfinals and won by pin over Zaur Nuriyev of Azerbaijan in his first bout.

Nutter was defeated in the semifinals by 2015 Cadet World silver medalist Abu Muslim Aptievitch Amaev of Russia, in a 9-0 technical fall, which put him in the third-place match.

Earnhardt plane video studied

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) — The plane carrying NASCAR great Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his family bounced multiple times during a crash landing and veered off the runway before ending up on a Tennessee highway, investigators said Friday.

“It’s just the grace of the good Lord that a vehicle didn’t get struck by the plane,” Elizabethton Police Chief Jason Shaw said at a news conference. “It’s a very heavily trafficked roadway.”

Earnhardt’s sister, Kelley Earnhardt Miller, said in a statement that all five people aboard the plane Thursday are “doing well.” Earnhardt, now a NASCAR television analyst, was taken to hospital for evaluation Thursday and discharged that day. Earnhardt was with wife Amy, 15-month-old daughter Isla, two pilots and a dog.

Eagles lure McCown back to NFL

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Josh McCown’s retirement lasted two months.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed the 40-year-old quarterback to a one-year deal on Saturday. He is coming out of retirement to join his 11th team and play his 17th season.

McCown provides insurance behind Carson Wentz, who has finished the past two seasons on the sideline because of injuries. The Eagles already lost two quarterbacks in the first two preseason games. Nate Sudfeld broke his left wrist and is expected to return in September. Cody Kessler left Thursday night’s game with a head injury.

McCown was 23-53 as a starter, including 5-11 with the Jets over the past two seasons. He’s completed 60.2 percent of his passes, has thrown 98 touchdowns, 82 interceptions and has a 79.7 passer rating.

NFL reinstates star-crossed Gordon

BOSTON (AP) — Josh Gordon’s winding career has included several second chances following a trail of multiple drug suspensions that cast doubt whether the talented but troubled playmaker would ever get on an NFL field again.

He’s getting yet another opportunity.

The NFL conditionally reinstated the Patriots wide receiver on Friday.

Commissioner Roger Goodell notified Gordon that today, Gordon can rejoin the team for meetings and conditioning and individual workouts. After that, according to a league statement, “Subject to appropriate progress on clinical care and other arrangements, he will be permitted to participate in team activities, including practice.”

But Gordon is barred from Thursday’s game because of a lack of sufficient conditioning and practice time.
