IRONWOOD -- The best high school volleyball teams in the Upper Peninsula didn't falter at all during the past week, prompting voters from the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association to keep the top-five rankings intact from the previous week.
Not even Gwinn, which was the only team earning votes that couldn't crack its top five, continued in its "others receiving votes" category.
In Divisions 1-3 voting, Negaunee (13-4) remained at No. 3 and Gwinn (11-6-1) in its position after the Miners defeated the Modeltowners in four sets in Negaunee last week.
That was the Miners' only match in that span, while Gwinn also posted a three-set home victory over Westwood.
At the top of D 1-3, Calumet (10-7) remained unanimous at No. 1 with a three-set home victory over Ishpeming, while Kingsford (10-1) stayed No. 2 with a three-set triumph at Gladstone.
Houghton (9-3) is still No. 4 after a five-set victory at Marquette, while Jeffers (6-3) kept its clamps on No. 5 after losing a five-setter at Baraga and downing L'Anse in three sets.
In Division 4, Baraga (16-0) kept No. 3 with the win vs. Jeffers while downing Dollar Bay in three tough sets.
Ishpeming (5-2-1) held onto No. 4 despite the loss to powerful Calumet, while Newberry (13-3-3) kept No. 5 after posting a four-set home win over Rudyard.
Hancock (14-2-1) remained at No. 1 unanimously after two three-set victories last week vs. West Iron County and Chassell.
Forest Park (18-3-1) stayed No. 2 with its lone match a three-set home win vs. Stephenson.
In matches involving area teams on Thursday, Manistique is at Westwood, Marquette at Calumet, Kingsford at Negaunee, Munising at Forest Park, Superior Central at North Dickinson, and Newberry at Cedarville.
On Saturday morning, Ishpeming, Westwood, Newberry and Manistique are listed in the field at the Elks Invitational in Escanaba.
Monday's light schedule has North Central at Munising and L'Anse at Hancock, while on Tuesday, Negaunee is at Manistique, Gladstone at Marquette, Hancock at Gwinn, Watersmeet at Baraga and Lake Linden-Hubbell at L'Anse.
