MARQUETTE -- Marquette swept the doubles and split at singles to score a 6-2 victory over Kingsford in a high school girls tennis meet held at the Sentinels' courts on Monday.
"We are just beginning Homecoming week at school, which means there are a lot of activities going on," MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email detailing the results. "So I was super impressed on how focused our girls were ... on the courts."
That included his No. 3 singles player Nora Skytta, who scored a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the Flivvers' Aubrey Belmore.
"Nora Skytta played one of her strongest matches of the year," Thomsen said. "In the first set, Nora hit the ball to the spots she wanted to and things were clicking.
"As the second set progressed, Aubrey elevated her game, but Nora upped her level of compete and responded like the senior she is.
"It was a great way to close out her dual meet career."
He was also happy with the play of his No. 4 doubles tandem, Grace Jandreau and Brynn Helman, who won 6-1, 6-3 over Kingsford's Claire Rutter and Alaysa Bacon.
"Grace Jandreau and Brynn Helman had a nice day on the courts as well," their coach said. "Last week, they had three close battles and I love the way they responded (Monday), with confidence, great team movement and aggressiveness."
Another tough victory the Sentinels pulled out was at No. 1 doubles, where Marquette's Eva Kentala and Charlotte Thomsen eked out a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) triumph over the Flivvers' Mira Johnson and Kylee Woodard.
After the Sentinels hosted the Great Northern Conference meet on Wednesday, MSHS is set to advance to the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals in Division 1 at 10 a.m. next Wednesday at Negaunee.
