NMU men’s soccer ties at Davenport

MARQUETTE -- Even with a goal from the nation's leading scorer that set a career milestone, the men's soccer team at Northern Michigan University was unable to get a win on Sunday afternoon.
But at least the Wildcats didn't lose, instead settling for a 1-1 tie at Davenport.
NMU moved its record to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Panthers are 1-3-3 and 0-1-1.
In this early part of the league season, the Wildcats are only behind 2-0 Roosevelt and ahead of three teams all at 1-1.
Senior captain Luca Rosen got Northern off to a rousing start Sunday, scoring just over 14 minutes in by finishing off a tic-tac-toe play from teammates Sergio Cano Castro and Ian Weimer.
The goal pushed the point total for his career -- which has been less than a season and a half at NMU -- to 42 to make him the record holder in that category. For the day, Rosen took six shots, with four on goal.
He helped the Wildcats maintain a 12-4 total shots advantage, including 5-3 in shots on goal as Northern goalkeeper Asaf Kristal finished with two saves, while his Parkside counterpart Nathan Hikspoors had four stops.
Cano Castro and Weimer each were awarded assists on Rosen's goal, giving them five and four assists, respectively, this season as both have also scored one goal.
NMU had an even bigger advantage in corner kicks, 12-3, while DU was whistled for more fouls, drew four of the five yellow cards, and even got a red card after Ethan Engle was shown yellow cards barely more than 10 minutes apart in the second half.
The Wildcats almost made it to halftime with its single-goal lead, but the Panthers' Dugan Black snuck in a goal 52 ticks before intermission to knot the score.
Black headed in a free kick from Archie Oliver, then withstood an NMU surge in the second half when Black's red card left his team with 10 players for the final 20-plus minutes.
Northern remains on the road for two more games in the next week, traveling to Chicago to face Roosevelt at 4 p.m. EDT Friday, then heading west to take on St. Cloud State (Minn.) for a GLIAC game at 3 p.m. EDT Sunday.
The Wildcats come home to the NMU Soccer Field beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, to take on Purdue Northwest. There's also a home game vs. Wisconsin-Parkside at noon on Sunday, Oct. 4, before they hit the road again.
