Miners, Sentinels win by big margins

By Steve Brownlee 4 min read

NEGAUNEE -- Negaunee posted a pair of dominant victories at its home courts on Thursday to improve its record to 11-1 with high school girls tennis working toward the end of its season.

The Miners blanked Munising 8-0 and felled Iron Mountain 7-1 with a dual meet left vs. Escanaba at home on Monday, then the Mid-Peninsula Conference tournament in Iron Mountain on Wednesday and the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals in Division 1 another week later.

Even in its loss, the Negaunee No. 4 doubles team of Emme Niemi and Sydney Jarvi worked hard in a three-set setback to their Menominee opponents. The Maroons' Annabell Adams and Kylie Sevon prevailed in that match 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Otherwise, there were seven matches where a Miners player or players didn't drop a single game in 6-0, 6-0 victories, including twice at No. 3 singles by Lucy Rogers and No. 2 doubles by Maia Brunette and Aubrey Harper.

Marquette 7, Menominee 1

On Thursday at Marquette, the Sentinels didn't drop a set in their seven victories, losing a total of just 15 games in them.

"We had a chance to celebrate our amazing seniors ... prior to the match and I think our girls used this Senior Day as motivation," MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email detailing the result.

He was particularly happy about two of his singles players.

"Kaylee Holzer, one of our seniors, played a tremendous match at No. 4 singles," the coach said. "Kaylee hit her groundstrokes with a lot of depth and withstood a push by the Menominee girl in the middle of the first set.

"Stella Dehlin played with a lot of variety at No. 1 singles. As the match progressed, Stella became a lot more patient and really showed some high tennis IQ by understanding when to attack and when to sit back."

Marquette has a similar schedule to Negaunee's as the season winds down, hosting Kingsford in a dual meet Monday before hosting the Great Northern Conference tournament on Wednesday.

The U.P. Finals in Division 1 follows a week later.
