NEGAUNEE -- Negaunee improved to 2-0 this season following a 42-6 pounding of Gladstone on Friday night.
The Miners jumped out to an early lead as senior Kyle Waterman rushed in for a 9-yard touchdown and Ty Neimi followed it up with a 12-yard TD run with 2:33 to go in the first quarter. With both 2-point conversions included, the Miners quickly led 16-0.
Negaunee added to the lead in the second quarter as Waterman connected with senior Cole Prusi on a 39-yard TD pass, making it 24-0. The Miners extended the lead to 30-0 going into halftime as Waterman hooked up with senior Evan DellAngelo on a 48-yard pass with 35 seconds left in the half.
"It was great to get off to a 2-0 start," DellAngelo said. "We played well as a team.... We played as the front of our jerseys, not the backs and were able to get a big win."
He made reference to the team name on the front of jerseys rather than players' names on the back.
Neimi found the end zone again in the third quarter as he ran it in from 17 yards out to put the Miners up 36-0.
The Braves (1-1) finally got on the board in the fourth quarter as junior Landon Pepin connected with junior Ryder Amis on a 36-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to 36-6.
"We had our opportunities out there," Braves coach Dennis Cannoot said. "We are pretty banged up and that changes things.
"I think Wyatt ran the ball well, even being banged up himself. We are learning every day, even me, it’s not just the players."
The Miners outgained the Braves 310 yards to 155 in total offense.
Negaunee and Calumet meet in a clash of 2-0 teams at the Copper Kings' field in the Keweenaw at 7 p.m. Friday.
