Almost an even WIN split: Miners take cross country team titles; Hematites, Patriots individual crowns

NEGAUNEE -- It's probably something that satisfied no coach, but the WIN meet in high school cross country had a pretty equitable distribution of triumphs on Thursday.
Running at the Negaunee Township trails, Negaunee swept the team titles in the traditional meet between three western Marquette County schools -- Westwood (the "W"), Ishpeming (the "I") and Negaunee (the "N").
But Ishpeming claimed the individual girls race winner, while Westwood did the same in the boys race.
Those winners included Hematites sophomore Sophie Mahoski for the girls, clocking 22 minutes, 28.3 seconds for a nearly two-minute victory over the first of a group of Miners occupying the next five places, junior Adela Miller in 24:06.2.
On the boys side, Patriots sophomore Calvin Carlson picked up a victory of well over a minute, coming in at 17:54.7 as Negaunee sophomore Tyler Rautiola was runner-up in 19:08.7.
Teamwise in the boys meet, the Miners scored 21 points to outdistance Westwood's 39 as Ishpeming didn't field a full unit so didn't post a team score.
Negaunee was the only one of the three schools with enough runners for a girls team score, automatically earning a perfect score of 15 as the other schools' runners didn't count in the scoring.
The boys race featured 16 runners, with Ishpeming's top runner, senior Kemper Gearhart, finishing third in 19:24.3.
The remainder of the top 10 included five Negaunee runners. They were freshman Patric Walters, fourth in 19:43.3; junior Quin Karlstrom, fifth in 20:04.2; freshman Evan Menge, sixth in 20:09.5; junior Anders Johnston, eighth in 20:36.3; and senior Marcel Juul, ninth in 20:45.1.
Westwood had the other two top-10 finishers, freshman Anaximander "Manny" Johnson, seventh in 20:24.9; and sophomore Nicholas Christensen, 10th in 20:49.9.
In the girls meet with 10 runners, four Miners immediately followed their teammate Miller inside the top six. Junior Eliza Sicotte was third in 24:06.3, senior Riley Conklin fourth in 24:22.8, junior Maija Roberts fifth in 25:43.6 and sophomore Gabby Green sixth in 26:06.5.
Ishpeming junior Madison Longtine was seventh in 27:13.1 and Westwood senior Oni Heinzel eighth in 27:29.0.
Negaunee and Ishpeming will be among the teams competing at the El Harger Invitational at the Pictured Rocks Golf Club in Munising at 4 p.m. Wednesday, while all three WIN teams will be at the Tracy Strom Invitational that doubles as West PAC meet No. 2 at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming at 4 p.m. Thursday.
