Sentinels double up on the road

By Steve Brownlee 4 min read

MARQUETTE -- Hitting the road was twice as nice for the Marquette Senior High School girls tennis team on Thursday after the Sentinels went to Gladstone and edged the Braves 5-3, then traveled further south to Menominee and posted an 8-0 whitewash against the Maroons.

Marquette has another of these two-meet road trips on Monday, playing at Kingsford at 11 a.m. EDT and at West Iron County at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

The Sentinels host Escanaba at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with the Eskymos heading west to Westwood that afternoon, with both Marquette County schools along with Negaunee participating in the Westwood Invitational starting at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Here's a roundup of Marquette's Thursday action:

Marquette 5, Gladstone 3

At Gladstone, the difference came down to the three-set matches, with MSHS winning two of them.

Marquette No. 4 singles player and varsity rookie Kaylee Holzer won 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 10-8 over the Braves' Aylah Seder, while the Sentinels' No. 3 doubles pairing of Grace Jandreau and Bryn Helman took a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 win over Gladstone's Tati Martinez and Caitlin Winkler.

"Quite a battle today," MSHS head coach Karl Thomsen said in an email detailing the result. "This meet could have went either way.

"Props to Kaylee Holzer, our No. 4 singles player. It was Kaylee's first varsity match and she definitely had nervous energy going to start the day.

"It didn't take her long to realize she was playing 'normal' tennis and she showed absolutely no nerves in the match tiebreak. I was super proud of her performance.

"Grace Jandreau and Brynn Helman at No. 3 doubles had a gutsy performance as well.

"They played a nice first set, had some ups and downs in Set 2, and played amazing tennis when they needed it most during the match tiebreak."

The Sentinels clinched the meet by winning three of four doubles matches after splitting 2-2 in singles.

Stella Dehlin at No. 1 also won in singles for Marquette, while Eva Kentala and Charlotte Thomsen at No. 1 and Lola Rink and Morgan Downey at No. 2 also won in doubles for MSHS.

Marquette 8, Menominee 0

At Menominee, the Sentinels only had two really contested sets over the eight matches.

No. 1 singles player Dehlin was ahead 6-5 in the opening set before opponent Madeline Mosey of Menominee had to withdraw.

And at No. 4 doubles, Marquette's Eileen Quigley and Ellia Marquardson won 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) with the second-set tiebreaker over the Maroons' Annabell Adams and Kylie Sevon. That came after the MSHS pair lost a tough three-setter at Gladstone.

"I'm really proud of how hard our No. 4 doubles team, Eileen Quigley and Ellia Marquarson, battled," Thomsen said. "Earlier in the day, they played a grueling match in Gladstone.

"So to see them come out firing on all cylinders against Menominee and then cap off a long day with a quality tiebreak in the second set tells me a lot about Eileen's and Ellia's level of compete."

In the other six matches, Marquette lost a total of just eight games.
