GLADSTONE -- The number three might've been lucky for Gladstone, but a trio of other numbers -- namely, one, two and four -- were what made winners of the Negaunee High School girls tennis team on the road on Friday.
The Braves won both matches at the No. 3 flights in their meet, but the Miners went on a sweep at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 to win the overall meet by a score of 6-2.
Now 3-0 this season, Negaunee needed three sets in just one of its wins, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory posted by No. 4 singles player Katie Carlson over Gladstone's Aylan Seder.
In the other five match victories, the Miners dropped a total of just 13 games.
Most impressive was the NHS' No. 1 doubles duo of Paige O'Donnell and Olivia Richards posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Braves' Lola Vargo and Ella Howes.
And just as much so were Negaunee's other two singles wins, a 6-1, 6-0 triumph posted by No. 1 Stella Lenten and 6-2, 6-0 victory by No. 2 Addie Chapman.
And we shouldn't forget a 6-0, 6-4 win put up by the Negaunee No. 2 doubles tandem of Maia Brunette and Aubrey Harper, nor a 6-4, 6-2 victory made by Audrey Hahn and Caitlyn Jarvi.
Gladstone got its wins at No. 3 singles, with Madison Sundquist posting a 6-2, 6-1 win over Negaunee's Lucy Rogers, and at No. 3 doubles, where the Braves' Tati Martinez and Caitlin Winkler posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Miners' Bree Helppi and Chloe Wommer.
Negaunee gets back on its home court at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Ishpeming, then takes a short drive west to play in the Westwood Invitational at 10 a.m. Thursday. The host Patriots and Marquette will also participate.
