NEGAUNEE -- Negaunee improved to 4-0 in the young season with an 8-0 victory over Ishpeming in the Miners' first home meet of the season last Tuesday.
Negaunee didn't drop a set, and in fact lost just 17 games across the seven contested matches, with the Hematites not fielding a No. 4 doubles pairing.
"We knew coming into the meet Ishpeming has a team with a lot of good athletes," Miners head coach Megan Kerkela said in an email detailing the results. "Across all flights, I was very happy with how our girls played. We focused on being a little more aggressive ... and overall executed that quite well.
"We have a young team this year and many of our players are starting to really find their groove and hit the ball well."
One Negaunee flight posted a "shutout," No. 4 singles player Katie Carlson winning 6-0, 6-0.
Additionally, the Miners' No. 1 doubles tandem of Paige O'Donnell and Olivia Richards posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ishpeming's Charlee Fredy and Stella Nerlfi, while Negaunee No. 1 singles player Stella Lenten earned a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over the Hematites' Sophia Nerlfi.
The Miners remain home to host Gwinn at 4 p.m. Tuesday, while at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Ishpeming hosts Munising and the Miners entertain Westwood.
