Gwinn coaches, booster members to learn about suicide prevention

GWINN -- It's a subject that often tough to tackle, but the Marquette County Suicide Prevention Alliance is teaming with Gwinn Area Community Schools for suicide prevention gatekeeper training for coaches and booster club members in the school district.

QPR training -- which stands for question, persuade and refer -- will be held at the Up North Lodge conference center from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday.

The lodge, Gwinn athletic director Luke Ghiardi and the Gwinn All-Sports Booster Club are also partners in this event, free to attendees who are affiliated with the school district.

The event will help participants learn the basics of suicide, risk factors and warning signs, along with how to intervene and help if they believe someone may be struggling with thoughts of suicide, according to Marquette County Health Department health educator Sarah Derwin in an MCHD news release.

"We know that often teens look up to their coaches and view them as very trusted adults," Derwin is quoted in the release. "This is an excellent opportunity to train and have a productive conversation to ensure that those trusted adults feel equipped and supported if any of their athletes show any signs they may be struggling."
