ESCANABA — The 40th annual Upper Peninsula All-Star Basketball Classic will be held today at Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba.

This is the second straight year that Bay College is hosting this event sponsored and conducted by the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m. with the skills competition that will include free throws, 3-pointers and dunks.

The Girls All-Star Game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., then the Boys All-Star Game at 7:30 p.m. Players from all over the U.P. will be split into North and South squads.

All players are recently graduated seniors who have used up their high school eligibility, as those who haven’t would be in danger of losing it by playing in these games.

Tickets will be sold at the door, with all proceeds to benefit the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame.

A total of 11 area players hailing from Marquette, Alger, Baraga and Luce counties are included among the 38 players, representing nearly 30% of the total.

Seven of the local players will be in the boys game, the remaining four in the girls.

Negaunee leads area representation with three players, Clare O’Donnell on the South girls team and Tristan Slater and Easton Guenette on the North boys team.

State girls champion Ishpeming has two of those Hematites players on the North girls team, Jenessa Eagle and Brittanie Piotrowski.

Westwood also has two representatives, both for the North boys, Ethan Marta and Caden Balzarini.

Marquette has a player on the South girls team, Lexi Curran, while Munising has Nolan Connaughton on the South boys squad.

Baraga’s Daniel Connor will be on the North boys unit as Newberry’s Kegan Martin will also be with the North boys.
