Salisbury, Nerlfi keep pace for Congress Pizzas

ISHPEMING — Marie Salisbury and Sophia Nerlfi put on their big-girl hitting shoes to lead Congress Pizzas to a 29-23 victory over Dave’s Collision/Jack’s in a Class A game played in the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on Wednesday evening.

Congress held on to first place by a half-game over Phil and Lee’s, which also won. Congress Pizzas is 5-1 and Phil and Lee’s 4-1, the latter having a rainout to possibly be made up.

Salisbury went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs, while Nerlfi was 2 for 4, also with a triple along with three RBIs.

Marissa Maino led Dave’s with five hits.

Phil and Lee’s Ellie Miller went 4 for 4 with a homer in a 19-1 victory over River Rock, which was kept from gaining a share of the top spot in “A.”

The winners’ Karlie Patron and Amanda Harlock each tripled, while River Rock’s Rayna Warchock was 2 for 2 and Alyssa Hill and Morgan Carlson both 2 for 3.

In another “A” encounter, Jess Harper was 4 for 4, Steph Pratt doubled twice and Brittany Singer and Taylor Oakland each homered as Jasper Ridge Brewery laid down a 27-22 decision over Tino’s, whose Alexis Forchini went 5 for 6 and Taryn Meyers hit two doubles.

Sara Baldini and Katie Wiljanen both tripled to lead LaCosse & Associates to a 12-6 double-up of Pasquali’s, whose Tayler Gray homered.

In Class B, Hailey Hytinen and Katie Mitchell each went 4 for 4, while teammates Mariah Heard and Kelsey Clark were both 4 for 5 as Paradise Bar downed Willey’s Tire Shop 20-5.

Hytinen hit a pair of homers, Mitchell one roundtripper, and Heard and Clark two doubles apiece, while Willey’s Lindsay Williams was 3 for 3, Miranda Cobb 2 for 3 with a double, and Lily Bleckler and Kyla Yuhas each doubling.

Also in “B,” Taylor Jackovich hit a grand slam homer while going 4 for 4 to lead Dee’s Nuts to a 14-13 nailbiter over Pineshears.

Dee’s Caylie Kangas, who homered, and Nichi Sundberg also were 4 for 4, while Pineshears’ Toni Tikkanen was 4 for 4 with a homer and double, and Livvie Denofre 2 for 4 with a homer.

Leah Dompierre hit for the cycle as Signs Unlimited posted a 19-3 win over Barron’s Auto Repair.

The winners’ Becky Gauthier, who homered, and Becca LaChapelle each went 4 for 4, while Barron’s Katie Duquette was 2 for 3 and Lyla Quinnell homered.

Laycee Mattson, Makenze Gerding and Alex Riley each were 4 for 4 as the Eagles posted a 23-2 triumph over Quality Car Care, who Rebecca Lammi was 3 for 3 and Joanna Smail, Connie Kontio and Brandi Petrocik all were 2 for 2.

Palomaki Family Chiropractic had a bye.

Here are the Week 6 league standings, noting that a half-dozen teams have had a rainout with no word about whether they will be made up. In addition, one Class B team has a bye each week:
