Eagles’ Negilski, Paradise Bar’s Mitchell knock it out of the park
ISHPEMING — The Eagles’ Olivia Negilski hit one over-the-fence home run while opponent Katie Mitchell of Paradise Bar hit two over the fence, but it was the Eagles who prevailed 20-13 in a Class B game in the Iron Range Women’s Softball League on Wednesday.
Negilski finished 4 for 4 on this night with an abbreviated league schedule as three of the eight games were called early due to rain.
One Class B game was called early between Barron’s Auto Repair and Dee’s Nuts, while in Class A, the same happened in the encounters between Phil and Lee’s vs. Jasper Ridge Brewery, along with Tino’s vs. Pasquali’s. Signs Unlimited in “B” had a bye.
For the winning Eagles, McKenze Gerding and Laycee Mattson each hit a pair of doubles while going 4 for 5 as teammate Brianna Bauer went 5 for 5.
For Paradise, Kelsey Clark hit a pair of doubles and Rachel Hytinen had one double as they and teammate Mitchell each went 3 for 3.
In another “B” game that also finished, Michelle Lusardi, Izzy Prusi and winning pitcher Tara Roberts each went 3 for 4 as Palomaki Family Chiropractic squeezed out a 15-14 win over Willey’s Tire Shop, whose Kyla Yuhas homered and Brooke Mitchell and pitcher Lindsay Williams each tripled.
Chelsey Wunder went 3 for 3 with a double to lead Pineshears to another squeaker, a 17-14 win over Quality Car Care.
The winners’ Toni Tikkanen, who homered, Nikki Long, who tripled, and Casey Dugan, who doubled, each went 3 for 4, while teammate Victoria Dishaw was 2 for 3 with a double.
Quality’s Lori Ring was a perfect 5 for 5 while Viv Lammi also reached perfection, going 4 for 4.
In Class A, Chelsie Wealton was 4 for 4 with seven RBIs and Katie Rankinen 3 for 4 with four RBIs as Congress Pizzas delivered a 19-8 victory over LaCosse & Associates, whose Jordan Kowalski tripled and collected four RBIs.
Also in “A,” Libbie Doney homered and Faith Toutant was 4 for 6 as Dave’s Collision/Jack’s put up a 23-17 triumph over River Rock, whose Delaney McLaughlin hit a pair of homers.
