Caliguri, Nerlfi support solid ‘D’ in Congress’ win

NEGAUNEE — With excellent play credited to their outfield, Shana Caliguri homered and was 2 of 3 and Sophie Nerlfi tripled and went 3 for 3 as Congress Pizzas edged Phil and Lee’s 5-4 in a Class A game played Wednesday in the Iron Range Women’s Softball League.

Phil and Lee’s Tami Tammelin hit a homer during this day’s slate, the fifth week of the season.

In another “A” contest, Lexi Pomplon homered and Krystle St. Andre tripled as LaCosse & Associates popped a 28-19 victory over Tino’s, whose Taryn Myers hit a pair of triples.

Emily Sweet doubled twice while going 4 for 5, Macey Nault homered and Libbie Doney doubled to lead Dave’s Collision/Jack’s to a 17-7 triumph over Pasquali’s, whose Brandee Spagnuolo was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Cheryl Kuzak doubled and had an RBI.

Also, River Rock held onto its share of first place with Congress Pizzas by downing Jasper Ridge Brewery 11-7 as each top team is 4-1.

In Class B, Hailey Hytinen hit three homers, Kylie Tobias a homer, triple and two doubles, and April Lawer two doubles as Paradise Bar outscored Signs Unlimited 25-12.

Hytinen, Tobias, Lawer and teammate Rachel Hytinen all went 5 for 6, while the winners’ Jennifer Hytinen-Polkki was 4 for 5.

For Signs, Leah Dompierre was 4 for 4 with a homer, Becky Gauthier 4 for 4 with a double, Nikki Maki 3 for 4 with a double and Becca LaChapelle 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles.

In another “B” game, Chelsea Roberts went 5 for 5 with two homers as Pineshears chopped down Willey’s Tire Shop 22-14.

The winners’ Livvie Denofre hit a homer, triple and double, while Toni Tikkanen tripled as both went 4 for 5.

Willey’s Chastity Hudson went 4 for 4 with a double.

Val Prusi and Mallory Pruitt-Shank each hit a pair of homers and Terri Todd went 5 for 5 as Palomaki Family Chiropractic bounced Barron’s Auto Repair 29-2.

Teammate and winning pitcher Tara Roberts was credited for good defense, while Barron’s Sierrah Hallum went 2 for 3.

Nichi Sundberg, who hit a homer and two triples, Jolene Silva and Stacy Sibley all went 4 for 4 as Dee’s Nuts cracked open a 30-9 win over Quality Car Care, whose Gina Debelak went 4 for 4 as she and teammate Katelyn Lammi both hit a pair of doubles.

The 4-0 first-place Eagles had a bye.
