Sentinels softball starts merry-go-round on bases

MENOMINEE — The Marquette Senior High School softball team put together 30 runs in just 10 innings of play in a doubleheader sweep at Menominee on Tuesday.

The Sentinels scored 13-3 and 17-3 victories, each game ending after five innings.

Charlye Swajanen and Makayla Gustafson pitched five-inning complete games for the triumphs.

After Marquette was scheduled to play another twinbill at home against Gladstone on Wednesday, MSHS then was getting the better part of a week off following around a dozen games played in the past seven or eight days.

Next up for the Sentinels is a home doubleheader against Menominee at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Here are details from the twinbill at Menominee:

Marquette 13, Menominee 3

In the opener, Swajanen allowed three runs — two earned — on six hits as she walked one and struck out six.

Marquette batters were able to pound out 11 hits and collect four walks, including 2-for-3 days from Alex Whaley, Ava Hanford and Maddy Havel. Havel got credit for four RBIs with a two-run single in the third and two-run double in the fourth.

The Sentinels took the lead for good in the third, but really put the game away with a nine-run fourth.

In the third, after Marquette’s Lauren Johnson hit an RBI double, Whaley got her first hit that drove in two runs to make it 4-2 MSHS.

While Menominee got one back in the bottom of the third, MSHS ended the scoring with its big outburst in the fourth. During that rally, Johnson hit into an RBI fielder’s choice, while Sammy Trapani hit an RBI single, Teagan Fossitt a two-run single, Whaley a two-run double, Swajanen drew a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded for an RBI, and Eva Dewitt cracked a two-run single.

The Sentinels overcame Menominee’s Arianna Johnson hitting a two-run homer to center field in the first inning.

Marquette 17, Menominee 3

In the nightcap, Gustafson allowed three runs on three hits and a walk as she K’d six.

Arianna Johnson again hit a homer for the Maroons, a three-run dinger in the opening inning, but Marquette rallied with a four-run second to take a 6-3 lead, tacking on 11 more runs in the final two innings.

While eight batters collected the Sentinels’ eight hits, Hanford hit a bases-loaded double for three RBIs in the fifth, while Havel scored four times, getting a hit, two walks and a hit-by-pitch to get on base. Havel, Swajanen, Dewitt and Lily Smiegel each had two RBIs, with Trapani and Whaley both scoring twice and Gustafson drawing three walks.

Marquette scored twice in the first after a Swajanen RBI double and Lauren Johnson RBI single.

Havel, Swajanen and Dewitt all were hit by a pitch in the second with the bases loaded each time, bringing in run for each. The fourth run scored on a passed ball.

In the fifth, an error scored one run and Gustafson’s walk brought in another before Hanford cranked her three-run double. After that, Havel hit an RBI single with a passed ball bringing in one more run.
