GWINN — Negaunee rolled up pretty monumental victories at the Mid-Peninsula Conference track and field meet held in Gwinn on Monday.
While the Miners boys scored 215 1/2 points to win by well over a hundred points, the Negaunee girls did even better, piling up 317 points as no other competitor even reached 100.
The Miners girls won their 16th consecutive championship, according to NHS girls head coach Vickie Paupore.
“Special congratulations to Sadie Rogers, Riley Conklin, Brynn Wieciech and Keira Waterman for breaking the Negaunee girls 1,600-meter relay record by over six seconds with a time of 4 minutes, 2.64 seconds,” Paupore said in emailed comments about the meet. “The previous record of 4:08.98 was set in 2010 by Kristina Mattson, Jayne Alexander, Jocelyn Clickner and Heather Moore.”

Girls meet
Manistique was runner-up in this meet with 85 points, which was more than double of third-place Ishpeming’s 42. Westwood was fourth with 34, while Gwinn had 17 and Iron Mountain 11.
Negaunee’s domiance showed in one interesting statistic — while the Miners didn’t win three of the meet’s 17 events, NHS also pulled off a 1-2-3 sweep in more than that, five of 13 events that weren’t relays.
Nori Korsman might’ve shown the brightest of the Negaunee athletes, but only by a little bit. She won three individual events, taking the pole vault by 2 1/2 feet after clearing, 9 feet, 6 inches; the long jump with a leap of 15-5, and the 800 in 2:36.88.
Teammate Sadie Rogers was right with her, winning the 100 hurdles in 16.56 — a more than second-and-a-half victory — and 200 in 26.94, then running with the victorious 1,600 relay in 4:02.64.
