Pickford boys dominate D-2 boys track, Munising 6th, Gwinn 8th

KINGSFORD — Pickford continued its winning ways here Saturday, taking home the Division 2 boys high school track and field title at the Upper Peninsula Finals in Kingsford on Saturday.

Winning for the fifth straight year, the Panthers’ current streak started in 2022 when they were still competing in Division 3. Since moving up to D-2, Pickford has gone 4 for 4.

This year, the Panthers scored 139 points, followed by Rudyard with 104, Bark River-Harris 77, and Norway and West Iron County with 47 apiece.

Munising was sixth with 39 points, followed by Ironwood with 32, Gwinn 30, Hancock 5, Ewen-Trout Creek 3, and Jeffers and Iron Mountain with 2 each.

Munising senior Avery Murk won the shot put with a personal-best toss of 42 feet, 4 inches, while classmate Dylan Adkinson, who will attend classes at Michigan Tech this fall, was runner-up in the 400-meter dash in 53.52 seconds, third in the 100 in 11.8 and fourth in the 200.

“There were some fast people here today,” Adkinson said. “I didn’t PR (a personal record) in anything, but I think the breeze had some effect in the backstretch.

“Overall, the day went OK. My starts were good. I haven’t had too many issues. I think my high school career went pretty good overall.”

The Mustangs also got fourth places from Blake Lakosky in the 3,200 and in the 3,200 relay with Lakosky, Bryce Kevern, Jacob Coppock and Dylan Krause.

Gwinn had a trio of third-place finishers. The 800 relay did that in 1:37.79 with Gage Jones, Ean Prahm, Peyton Bell and Kingston Reynolds; Rylee Jones tied for third in the pole vault by clearing 10-0; and Prahm was third in the long jump with 17-11 3/4 as teammate Gage Jones was fourth also in the long jump.

Adding another fourth place for the Modeltowners was the 400 relay of Gage Jones, Prahm, Bell and Reynolds.

Pickford senior John Anderson was a triple winner, taking the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 42.01, high jump after clearing 6-6 and long jump at 20-2½.

Classmate Gunner Bennin added a first in the 400 in a season-best 52.54 and helped the Panthers take the 400 relay in 46.03.

Rudyard senior Steve Kirschner also won three individual events — the 800 in a personal-best 2:04.60, the 1,600 in 4:38.99 and 3,200 with a season-best 10:51.37. And he helped his Bulldogs capture the 1,600 relay in 3:44.48.

Freshman Jett Sawyer provided the Bulldogs with an additional first after clearing 11-0 in pole vault.
