BARK RIVER — The Negaunee girls golf team enjoyed a historic Wednesday at Sage Run Golf Course.

The Miners carded 383 to win the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals in Division 1 girls golf by 24 strokes — with the championship the program’s first ever after previous runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2022.

Even last year, Negaunee finished in a distant fourth place, about 50 strokes behind that year’s winner Escanaba.

Returning four golfers from last year’s finals lineup, the Miners placed two of them — and three golfers total — among the top 10 in the individual standings.

Junior Adyson Crookham finished third with 89, while senior Kennidy Glasheen tied for fourth with 90 and senior Sonya Erva tied for eighth with 98. Glasheen scored a birdie on No. 18.

Rounding out the Negaunee lineup was sophomore Kendall Skewis with 106, a tie for 16th, and senior Reyna Debelak with 112.

Each played in last year’s finals for NHS except Glasheen.

Escanaba finished runner-up in the team standings with 407, followed by Kingsford with 426, Calumet 430 and Marquette in fifth with 440. Also among the 11 schools posting a team score, Westwood was eighth with 462, while Manistique was 10th with 520.

Escanaba senior Kamrie Scott finished as medalist for the third straight season with 83. She became the 16th golfer to win at least three U.P. Finals girls championships, and second from her school joining four-time winner Paxton Johnson, who achieved the feat from 2016-19.

Scott got in some trouble on the front nine, but turned it around on the back as she parred five straight holes and had a birdie at No. 16 before ending with a pair of bogeys.

“I started off rough,” Scott said. “My putting came together on the back nine and really improved the day.”

Sault Ste. Marie freshman Renee Guan finished second with 87, including a birdie on the 16th. After Negaunee’s Crookham, Menominee senior Lexi Marineau tied for fourth with Glasheen with 90. Marineau had a birdie on the 16th and parred the final two.

Kingsford sophomore Charlotte Todd and Calumet freshman Cali Hodges tied for sixth, each with 95. Todd struggled on the back nine but birdied the 16th and parred the last two holes. Hodges didn’t have a birdie but parred the last two holes on the front nine and also the 10th.

Erva and Westwood junior Alison Erdman tied for eighth, each with 98, while Escanaba’s Lily VanDamme rounded out the top 10 with 99 that included a birdie on the 16th.

“We played well today as a team,” Escanaba coach Brian Robinette said. “Kamrie makes being a coach look pretty easy, but she puts in all the hard work to keep her game strong.”

Manistique senior Kyra Carlson carded 104 and parred two of her last three holes to finish 12th.

“I was working on being efficient with my hits,” Carlson said. “Just tried to keep them in sight and on the fairways.”

Marquette, which only missed third place by 14 strokes, was paced by a trio of seniors. Hayden Schetter led the way with 107, tying for 17th, while Delanie Rhoades and Kylie Smith were right with her, each with 108 to tie for 19th. Then came sophomore Laine Hruska shooting 117, while senior Elise Busick added in 122.

For Westwood, in addition to Erdman’s top-10 finish, freshman Tessa Burke carded 118, sophomore Lyla Quinnell 120, junior Taylor Keranen 126 and junior Kenzie Etelamaki 144.

From Manistique, after Kyra Carlson’s 12th-place finish, senior Maya Carlson added 112, junior Lily Knaffla 143 and freshman Amy Knaffla 161.
