Negaunee, Marquette boys tennis continue to roll

MARQUETTE — With the spring sports season quickly winding down toward MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals tournaments in just about two weeks, several area high school boys tennis teams continue with their success on the courts.

Both playing at home on Monday afternoon, Negaunee defeated Westwood 8-0 and Marquette upended Escanaba 7-1.

Marquette plays at Westwood at 4 p.m. today, while both those teams being in the field at the Negaunee Invitational at 10 a.m. Friday.

Marquette will be at the Great Northern Conference meet at 9 a.m. Monday in Escanaba, while Westwood will host Negaunee, Ishpeming and Gwinn at the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Here is a roundup of Monday’s meets:

Negaunee 8, Westwood 0

At the Miners courts, Negaunee improved to 9-0-2 in dual meets with a two-set victory in all eight matches, three days after edging the host Flivvers at the Kingsford Invitational.

“We talked about the importance of playing well and maintaining focus on a Monday following a tournament win,” Miners head coach Kyle Saari said in an email detailing the result. “It’s the time of year where you try to solidify seeding and each match matters.”

While Negaunee lost a total of just 20 games in the other seven flights, the No. 4 doubles tandem of Wyatt Nelson and Brandon Alba had to put out a bit more effort to get past the Patriots’ Sean Grove and Brady Aronson, 6-1, 7-5.

“Wyatt and Brandon hit a rough spell in the second (set), but they stayed level headed at 4-5 and won three straight games,” Saari said. “They kept it simple and it paid off.”

He was also pleased with the performance of No. 2 singles player Nolan O’Dovero, who won 6-1, 6-1 over WHS’ Caden Balzarini.

“Nolan played one of his better matches today,” his coach said. “He’s transitioned himself real nicely into a solid (No.) 2 singles player, and he’s striving to get to the top of that bunch.

“He’s a good leader for us, and is always looking for ways to gain an edge. We expect a big week out of him, and Easton (Guenette) at (No.) 1 singles.”

Guenette recorded a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Pats’ Damian Grondz.

Marquette 7, Escanaba 1

At the Sentinels courts, MSHS split a pair of three-set matches, with No. 4 Dominic Camilli defeating Escanaba’s Kyle Smith 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-4, while the Eskymos prevailed at No. 2 singles, Brett Swanson winning over Marquette’s Brady Janofski, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

“It is that time of the season where us coaches like to see the team start to eliminate early-season mistakes and dig deep in those pressure situations,” Sentinels head coach Karl Thomsen said in his emailed comments detailing the meet. “We are getting down to crunch time with the tournaments beginning with the Negaunee Invite this Friday.

“As always, we need to tune in on the finer points of our tennis to give us a shot in these tournaments.

“At No. 4 singles, Dominic Camilli had a rollercoaster of a match. Dom had to play come-from-behind after giving up a lead in set one. I was impressed how Dom weathered the storm, kept his emotions very level, and changed his tactics in the second and third sets.”

He was also happy to get a sweep in doubles, including No. 4 Billy Krebs and Jack Tiziani winning 6-0, 6-1 over Esky’s William Derkos and Brady McIntyre.

“Our doubles teams all had a good day and what I am happy about is their decision making, communication and movement,” Thomsen said. “At No. 4 doubles, Billy Krebs and Jack Tiziani continue to grow as a team.

“They have continually gotten better each match and are really doing a great job of playing off each other’s shots.”
