The Sentinels won by a fairly comfortable margin with 123 points as runner-up Kingsford had 96. Houghton was third with 82, then Negaunee had 52, Gladstone 38, Escanaba 36 and Menominee 27.

Westwood was eighth with 13, while Manistique had 12, Forest Park 8 and Gwinn 4.

Marquette won a half-dozen events, led by Rorik Holmquist sweeping the two longest distances, taking the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 45.09 seconds and the 3,200 in 10:26.69.

Teammate Lucas Ballard also had a hand in two victories, winning the 800 in 1:59.01 and running a leg of the Sentinels’ triumphant 1,600 relay in 3:41.06. Teaming up with him were Zachariah Chaney, Beepsee Teeple and Joey Tuccini.

MSHS’ Jacob Norman won the 110 hurdles in 16.16 seconds, while teammate Ford Richardson took the 400 in 52.20.

Also for Marquette, Richardson was second in the 100 by just over a quarter-second to winner Samuel Roth of Houghton, while the Sentinels had a pair of runner-up relays — the 3,200 with Teeple, Jack Grant, William Lindsay and Welly Fillmore, and the 800 with Oliver Kudej, Sam Reissner, Ben Rayhorn and Charles Hrodey.

In addition, Ballard was second to Holmquist in the 3,200 by the slimmest of margins for this long race, just four-hundredths of a second behind in 10:26.73. And teammate Welly Fillmore was third, again by a razor-thin difference as he was seven-hundredths of a second behind Ballard.

Marquette’s Thomas Matthews added a third place in the pole vault, actually tying the height cleared by runner-up Isaac Lambert of Escanaba but losing out on a tiebreaker.

Westwood’s Louis Salmi won the pole vault after clearing 11-feet even, while he was fourth in the long jump as teammate Jared Waterman was sixth in the 800.

Negaunee didn’t have an event win, but had three seconds and four thirds. Runners-up included Nash Barabe in the discus by seven feet to Houghton’s Solena, the Outstanding Performer for the boys.

Also finishing second for the Miners was Cole Prusi in the long jump and Cole Pekrul in the 300 hurdles.

Negaunee’s third-places were turned in by Ethan Gauthier in the discus, Derek McEachern in the 400, Pekrul in the 110 hurdles and the Miners’ 3,200 relay of Henry Plummer, Quin Karlstrom, Anders Johnson and Simon Jaklin.

Manistique’s Sam Moose was second in the shot put and fourth in discus, while Gwinn’s Rylee Jones was fourth in the pole vault.

Girls meet

As they have been doing this spring, Negaunee rolled up a quite hefty team victory in the girls meet, scoring 178 points to runner-up Marquette’s 98.

Gladstone was third with 60, followed by Forest Park with 51 1/2 and Houghton 42.

Manistique and Kingsford tied for sixth with 36, while Escanaba had 13 1/2, Menominee 7 and Gwinn 1.

The Miners won eight events, including three of the four relays.

Waterman, the top girls performer of the meet, won the 400 in 58.50 seconds and the 800 in 2:30.36, while teammate Sadie Rogers took the 100 hurdles in 16.31 and 300 hurdles in 51.07.

Two other Negaunee athletes actually had a hand in three wins when relays are included.

Elvera Coyne won the 100 in 12.88 seconds and ran with the victorious 400 relay in 52.43 and 800 relay in 1:51.10.

And those two relays, plus the Miners’ winning 1,600 relay in 4:22.42, all included Brynn Wieciech.

Also on both the 400 and 800 relays were Izzy Francisco and Ayla Reichel, while the 1,600 relay also included Riley Conklin, Nori Korsman and Josie Mechling.

Negaunee had a rather close call in the high jump as Coyne was runner-up as she and winner Maggie Karl of Gladstone both cleared 4-10, but Karl won the tiebreaker.

And the Miners had another half-dozen runner-up finishes, too. They included Waterman in the long jump and also in the 200 by two-hundredths of a second to winner Ella Bracket of Gladstone.

There was also Francisco in the 100, Rogers in the 400, Korsman in the pole vault and Priya Morey in the discus.

Three more third places were also gained by Negaunee, Mechling in the 300 hurdles, Korsman in the high jump and Alina Nelson in the discus.

Marquette won four events, with Ella Fure having a hand in two of them. She won the 3,200 in 11:29.59, a more than 65-second victory, and ran anchor in the victorious 3,200 relay in 10:27.00 with teammates Amira Perrier, Ava Cantway and Emma Ziegler.

In addition, the Sentinels’ Brynn Autio won the discus with a toss of 100-7 and Taylen Todd took the long jump with a leap of 17-4.

Ziegler was second in the 1,600, while MSHS’ 800 relay with Eva Nystrom, Willow Todd, Taylen Todd and Jordyn Anthony was also a runner-up.

Marquette also chalked up another four third-places — Anthony did it in the 100, Ziegler in the 800, Nystrom in the 200 and the 400 relay did it with Anja Holsworth, Lilly Demeuse, Taylen Todd and Nystrom.

Manistique had a pair of seconds and also two thirds. The Emeralds’ Gwen Brewster was runner-up in the shot put, while its 400 relay was second with Harper Andersen, Kendyl Flodin, Alexandria Scheffer and Aaliyah Sears.

Manistique’s thirds were turned in by Kyra Carlson in the pole vault and the 800 relay quartet with same four runners as the 400 relay.

Gwinn got a sixth place from Adeline Derwin in the discus and seventh place from Alayna Soyring in the 400.
