Miners girls dominant at Flivver Invite track
KINGSFORD — The Negaunee High School girls track team ran, threw and leapt to a dominating victory at the Flivver Invitational on Thursday in Kingsford.
The Miners were so transcendent that their 191 points was more than the combined total of the other four teams — the host Flivvers, Westwood, Ishpeming and Iron Mountain had scores that added up to only 150.
Kingsford was runner-up with 75, Westwood had 34, Ishpeming 31 and IM 10.
The boys meet was much closer with the Flivvers scoring 130 to 107 1/2 for Negaunee. Westwood was third with 59, then Ishpeming with 39 1/2 and IM 16.
The three western Marquette County schools — Westwood, Ishpeming and Negaunee — combine their initials for the annual WIN meet in track and field at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Negaunee.
In addition, Marquette, Gwinn and Munising are area teams converging on Manistique for the Emerald Invitational that same afternoon, while Munising and Superior Central are scheduled to visit Stephenson, also on Tuesday.
Here are details from the Flivver Invite:
Girls meet
The Miners didn’t score all their points without a whole bunch of good finishes — Negaunee won 12 of the 17 events, picking up a runner-up finish in three of the remaining events, along with six second-places in events they had already won.
The Miners swept all four relays — even getting a runner-up finish with another quartet in one of them — and also won both hurdles events and three of the field events.
Four athletes were triple winners, counting relays.
Sadie Rogers won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.32 seconds over teammate and runner-up Izzy Francisco, and the 300 hurdles in 49.02 over another teammate who was runner-up, Josie Mechling.
Rogers also ran a leg of the winning 400 relay with Francisco, Elvera Coyne and Keira Waterman in 52.45 seconds.
Waterman tripled up, too, also winning the 800 by more than seven seconds in 2:30.88 over teammate and runner-up Brynn Wieciech, while also running a leg of the victorious 1,600 relay in 4:28.26 with Nori Korsman, Riley Conklin and Mechling. That relay won by nearly 25 seconds.
Conklin was another three-time winner, adding to her relay the 400 in 1:05.66 and a leg of the winning 3,200 relay in 11:35.19 with Clare O’Donnell, Adelyn Chapman and Liliana Saunders. That group won by more than 35 seconds.
In addition to her leg of the 400 relay, Coyne added individual wins in the 100 in 13.32, a 0.24 of a second win over Francisco, and in the high jump by clearing the bar at 5-feet-even.
Complementing her 1,600 relay triumph, Korsman also won the pole vault by clearing 9-feet.
And Paige O’Donnell won the shot put with a heave of 27-11.75 over runner-up and teammate Izzy Niemi.
That left one more Negaunee victory, that coming in the 800 relay with Wieciech, Francisco, Ayla Reichel and Saunders in 1:54.74, which was the relay with another Miners group placing second about four seconds back.
Westwood and Ishpeming each won one event.
For the Patriots, Addelyn Hallum took the 200 in 28.74, a victory by more than a second, while she was second in the 400 and third as part of the 1,600 relay with Kamryn Lavigne, Piper Etelamaki and Ava Gobert.
Westwood’s 3,200 relay was runner-up with Grace Shandonay, Etelamaki, Lavigne and Gobert, adding a third place in the 3,200 by Shandonay.
The Hematites’ victory was posted by Sophie Mahoski in the 3,200 in 14:01.45, a victory by more than 70 seconds, as she was also second in the 1,600.
Teammate Nora Jo Anderson was second in the high jump and third in both the 200 dash and 300 hurdles.
Boys meet
While a few more Miners scored points further down the standings, all three Marquette County schools had two event victories in the boys meet.
Negaunee’s came by way of Derek McEachern in the 400 in 54.95 seconds, while Cole Prusi was triumphant in the 110 hurdles in 17.36, just 0.19 of a second ahead of teammate and runner-up Cole Pekrul.
McEachern was also third in the 100 and ran with the 800 relay, one of three Miners relays to finish as a runner-up. That particular group also included Blayne LaCosse, Marshall Peters and Aries Korsman.
Prusi added a second place in the 300 hurdles and fourth places in the long jump and high jump.
Negaunee’s Ethan Gauthier was second in the shot put and discus, while Pekrul was runner-up in the high jump.
The Miners’ second-place 400 relay included Broc Bonovetz, Evan Asikainen, Korsman and Peters, while the runner-up 1,600 relay had LaCosse, Aaron Maki, Max Frustaglio and Jace Collins.
For Westwood, Louis Salmi won the pole vault by clearing 11-feet-even, a win by a foot and a half over teammate and runner-up Gavin Comero, while the Patriots’ 1,600 relay won in 3:59.22 with Comero, Caleb Christensen, Jared Waterman and Ellis King.
King was also runner-up in the 200 and ran with the WHS third-place 800 relay, joining Comero, Salmi and Jaks Williams.
Calvin Carlson was runner-up in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600, while Breckin Jensen was second in the 800 and on the 3,200 relay that also included Johnny Jestila, William Niemi and Waterman.
From Ishpeming, winners were Kemper Gearhart in the 800 in 2:19.95, a win by nearly 3 1/2 seconds, and Derek Meyer in the 300 hurdles in 44.42, a more than two-second victory.
Gearhart was also second in the 1,600, fourth in the 3,200 and third with the Hematites’ 3,200 relay that included Josh Wojie, Legend Hewitt and Mateusz Wozniak.
Meyer was also third in the pole vault, while Hewitt tied for fourth in the high jump.
